The Mattaponi River

Pulling out at Aylett, VA.
Paddling near Zoar State Forest.

One of the upper sections of the river.

Took this photo while waiting to start a paddle one morning.

Lower section near Walkerton, VA.

Very interesting find, a thick layer of fossilized shells.

Just before the wind picked up.

The above photos were taken while paddling and exploring the Mattaponi River. I have been paddling this river for over two years and have really enjoyed experiencing what the river has to offer. The river is rich in history, geology and biology. The Mattaponi is known as one of the cleanest lowland rivers in the Eastern U.S. It flows for about 85 miles through the coastal plain of Eastern Virginia.
